Private Richard Moore
Richard Moore was born on 14 January 1889 at Tobermore, Magherafelt, County Londonderry, the first of fourteen children of agricultural labourer Thomas Moore and his wife Mary (née Johnston). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Moneyshanere, Tobermore, with his parents and eleven surviving siblings (another would be born soon after), and was working as an agricultural labourer. At some point he worked as coachman for Sir Hiram Wilkinson on his Moneyshanere estate.
It appears that Moore enlisted in the North of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry around 1907, re-enlisting in the North Irish Horse when the Yeomanry regiment was disbanded and the Horse formed in mid-1908.
How long he served with the regiment is not known at present, but he may have been discharged at some point following the conclusion of his four-years' service (mid-1912), and before the commencement of the war in August 1914.
On 28 November 1912 Moore married Mary Scott of Tobermore in the Magherafelt Registrar's Office. Their child William was born a year later.
Moore died as a result of pneumonia following influenza at Drumballyhagan, near Tobermore, on 6 December 1918. It seems probable that he was buried in the family plot in the Tobermore Presbyterian Church Old Graveyard.
